CBD Oil For Breastfeeding Mothers: Is it Safe?

CBD or cannabidiol is one of the commonly known elements found in the cannabis plant. For a number of years now, it has been used as an effective treatment for various conditions such as Parkinson’s, cancer, diabetes, post-traumatic stress disorder, multiple sclerosis, schizophrenia among many others. Also, CBD has a wide range of benefits and is being used by breastfeeding mothers. Even though it doesn’t have psychoactive properties as compared to THC, the use of CBD by breastfeeding mothers has been a contentious issue with most people asking whether it’s really suitable for them. In this article, we will look at CBD for breastfeeding mothers to see if it’s suitable or not.

CBD Oil For Breastfeeding Mothers

CBD oil is used by breastfeeding mothers mainly to help against depression and anxiety. When a mother gives birth, she may be affected by postpartum depression (PPD). An estimated 15% (or higher) of women experience this condition, translating to over 900,000 women each year. This is not an easy condition for newly given birth mothers to deal with. To make the matters worse, obstetricians and pediatricians don’t screen for PPD, and thus making it difficult for women with this condition to bond well with their newborn babies.

Since breastfeeding is a critical matter, most women prefer going for natural products to fight against postpartum depression. Even though using antidepressants is a common treatment, this form of treatment is not guaranteed to work. Furthermore, it has side effects such as dizziness, insomnia, diarrhea and weight gain. Rather than going for antidepressants, breastfeeding mothers are now preferring CBD Oil due to its natural nature and effectiveness.

Why is CBD Oil For Breastfeeding Mothers a Contentious Issue?

The main reason why there are issues surrounding CBD oil for breastfeeding mothers is that enough research has not yet been conducted. There have been past studies on the effects of THC on pregnant mothers but when it comes to CBD oil for lactating mothers, there isn’t enough research. And the few test studies that have been conducted have shown inconsistent results. The fact is, CBD oil is an effective treatment for postpartum depression. The only problem is that few studies have done to ascertain whether CBD oil can affect the breastfeeding baby negatively.

Breast Milk Contains Cannabinoids Naturally

Studies conducted on breast milk have shown that there are cannabinoids present and they are crucial for normal baby development. The cannabinoids stimulate the process of suckling and thus teaching a baby how to eat. If these cannabinoids were not there, babies would not have the desire to eat and they wouldn’t know how to eat. This would result in malnourishment and eventually death. This clearly shows the significance of cannabinoids in a baby’s body.

Is It safe to Breastfeed While Using CBD Oil?

As mentioned earlier, there only a few studies with regard to breastfeeding and CBD oil. Determining the amounts of CBD in breast milk is a challenge in itself. Mothers who experience PPD have difficulties breastfeeding. If PPD becomes serious, it may cause harm to both you and your baby. You have to weigh between the risk of taking CBD oil vs the rewards it brings. Even though there isn’t enough information on how CBD oil affects breast milk, CBD oil is a proven and tested product that can help you against PPD.

The only available information on this issue is that CBD is more of a better choice as compared to THC when battling PPD. Also, CBD is prescribed for children with seizures because it is non-intoxicating and has no side effects. Pharmaceutical drugs prescribed for lactating mothers, on the other hand, have side effects such as slowing breathing and sometimes even seizures. This leaves CBD oil as the most desirable choice.

How to Breastfeed While Using CBD Oil

Different people face PPD in different severities. Also, different people have different ways of handling supplements in their bodies. What this means is that there isn’t a specified exact amount of CBD oil that you should take. It’s recommended that you start with low doses then increase the amount gradually after assessing how it impacts your body.

Even though there isn’t enough information on CBD and breastfeeding, it worth to note that CBD is a natural product. It’s a far much better choice as compared to pharmaceutical products.
